Creative Kids: Chocolate Ice Cream

Even though Washington still has not gotten the memo that it is Summer yet, I thought it would be fun to pretend it was sunny & hot outside & make homemade ice cream with the girls.  It was my first attempt at making ice cream so I had no idea how the final product would turn out.  But you never know if you don't try, right??!!

Today's Chocolate Ice Cream recipe came from the Highlights High Five magazine.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup chocolate soy milk *I used regular chocolate milk*
1 TBSP sugar
Ice cubes
6+ TBSP salt
1 quart-sized zippered plastic bag
1 gallon-sized zippered bag

* Pour 1/2 cup of chocolate milk and 1 TBSP of sugar into a quart-sized zippered plastic bag (Bag A).  Squeeze out the air and zip it shut.

* Add ice cubes to a gallon-sized zippered bag (Bag B).  Sprinkle 6 TBSP of salt on the ice.  Put Bag A on top of the ice.  Add more ice & salt.  Zip Bag B shut.

* Pull on a pair of gloves and shake, shake, shake the bag for 8-10 minutes or until the mixture freezes.  Keep shaking until it gets thick.

* Scoop out your ice cream into a bowl & ENJOY!

What a fun little project!  I, or course, ended up doing most of the shaking.  I think I shook the bags for about 10 minutes.  Maybe a little bit less because the girls were chomping at the bit to eat their ice cream.  Kennedy's ice cream was nice & thick (purple bowl).  I think I should have shook Ashby's bag a little longer.  Her ice cream was still a little watery (green bowl).  Never the less, the ice cream tasted delicious and Kennedy & I gobbled it all up!  Ashby still has an issue with the texture and/or coldness of the ice cream (remember this post?) so she didn't eat hers.  Crazy girl!

If you are looking for an easy but fun activity with your child(ren), I highly recommend this one!
