Oh my goodness, I am so far behind on The 52-Week Organized Home Challenge! Like a month behind! Oops. Marc & Kennedy's birthday as well as being away for Easter really threw me for a loop! But I'm determined to get back on track, so I'm going to try to do a couple challenges each week until I get caught up again.
This week's challenge I worked on was Creating a Tax Organizer System & Organizing Receipts.
Lucky for me, I had already done this challenge (unbeknownst to me) when we filed our taxes awhile back. Go me!
All of our tax information is stored in a file folder where we file our bills, so that wasn't really a problem.
The main thing that I needed to get under control was all of my receipts for Scentsy!
I'm sure if we were to get audited (which I pray we don't!), Mr IRS guy would not appreciate finding my receipts in this garbage bag.

OMG! What a mess! I cannot believe I'm admitting to you all that this is where my Scentsy receipts are stored! How embarrassing!
Not to mention, none of them were entered in to my Excel spreadsheet for when our accountant filed our taxes either. Bad, Jessica!!!
So, I literally spent a good 8 hours entering in all of my receipts into the computer & then organizing them into my little accordion folder I got at the Dollar Spot at Target.
I used the stickers they provided & wrote 2011 in the front of the folder & then all of the subsequent months behind it.
That way I could organize all of the receipts by month & have them neatly stored in this compact folder in case we get audited down the road (which, again, I pray we don't). Hey Mr. IRS guy! I'm sure you need to check up on many other people that make A LOT more money than us! Ha!
But just in case, I am all organized & ready for you to audit me!
And now I just need to be good at entering this year's receipts into my Excel spreadsheet every month & keeping them organized in this folder. Yeah, still working on that one.
Hopefully now, though, since I'm about to publish this on my blog, it will help keep me more accountable & I will be more on top of organizing all of my receipts.
Because, I do not want to have to spend another 8+ hours doing this come tax time next year!

I love that you showed us the garbage back with the receipts and love your new system. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness, you do not want to even know how bad *mine* are if I would ever get audited! Mine is more like a giant pile of receipts and a lot of estimating for the receipts that are missing LOL. Fingers crossed I never get audited either!!!! :-)
