Creative Kids: Whatta Melon Pop!

I found this adorable popsicle recipe in the most recent Family Fun magazine & I just had to try it with the girls.  The recipe was for Whatta Melon Pops.

Ingredients
1 cup strawberry sorbet
2 teaspoons mini chocolate chips
3 tablespoons water
1/2 cup lemon sorbet
2 drops green food coloring
wedge-shaped popsicle molds
popsicle sticks

* Mash together 1 cup strawberry sorbet, 2 teaspoons mini chocolate chips, and 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl.

* Put the the mixture into wedge-shaped popsicle molds, filling each about two-thirds full.  An easy way to fill the molds is mix these ingredients in a ziplock bag, snip a corner of the bag, then pipe in the mixture.

* Spoon a thin, even layer of lemon sorbet on top.

* In a small bowl, stir together 1/2 cup lemon sorbet, 2 drops green food coloring, and 1 tablespoon water.

* Spoon a layer into each mold and insert a popsicle stick.

* Freeze the pops for at least four hours....and ENJOY!

WHAT??!!

That WAS NOT what they were supposed to look like!!!  Where is the white?  And the green?  I have no idea what I did wrong!  Ugh.  I am obviously not Martha Stewart!  Ha!  The girls didn't seem to mind though.  They loved the popsicles & thought they tasted delicious!

Well, my Type A personality WAS NOT happy with the how these popsicles turned out.  So when the girls went to bed, I went back to work & re-made them.  My sister, Sarah, had suggested that maybe I should try to do a layer at a time, sticking the molds back in the freezer after each layer to help 'harden' the mixture a little bit before adding in the next layer.  So that is what I did.  I put the first layer in, put the molds in the freezer for 5-10 minutes, then added the second layer & put it back in the freezer for another 5-10 minutes, and did the same for the third layer.  This morning when I took the popsicle out of the mold, this is what I found...

MUCH BETTER!

Still not exactly what the picture looks like, but at least it resembles a watermelon!  Such a cute project to do with the kiddos!  If you get a chance, I highly recommend you make these with your children...or just for yourself!  And post a picture of your finished product.  I'm sure they will look MUCH better than mine! :)

  1. I saw those in Parents and they looked so yummy! I'll definitely have to give them a try (although I don't have much faith that mine will look like the photo either!).
